Google Doodle is celebrating the 226th birthday of French-American Painter and Ornithologist John James Audubon today with a tweaked logo. Google Doodle is remembering the famous artist with sketches of the birds of North America.
John James Audubon was born on April 26, 1785. He was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, hunter, and profound painter. He painted and described the birds of North America in a manner far superior to what had been done before.
Audubon left a unique legacy and imperishable name. Audubon’s greatness as an artist was based on a deep feeling for nature which developed early in his childhood. At the age of 18, Audubon came to America from France to avoid joining Napoleon’s Army and pursued his forefathers' business.
From his earliest days, Audubon had interest for birds. His unique method of painting them in life-like position was admired by every artist of his era. According to one of Audubon’s writings, "I felt an intimacy with them...bordering on frenzy must accompany my steps through life."
His early paintings of birds included very sparse background, usually only a tree branch or leaves, but later he developed more attractive backgrounds to support his compositions.
Audubon’s father encouraged his interest in nature; "he would point out the elegant movement of the birds, and the beauty and softness of their plumage. He called my attention to their show of pleasure or sense of danger, their perfect forms and splendid attire. He would speak of their departure and return with the seasons," said Audubon's father.
He also played flute and violin, and learned to ride, fence, and dance. He loved roaming in the woods and often returned with natural curiosities such as birds' eggs and nests, of which he made his unique drawing.
Although Audubon’s father wanted to make him a seaman, he went to military school and became a cabin boy. He quickly found out that he was suffering from seasickness and was also not fond of mathematics or navigation. Therefore, Audubon ended his incipient naval career and began focusing on birds.
Audubon’s health began to fall in 1859 and after two years of illness, he died on January, 27, 1957. He is buried at 155th Street and Broadway in Manhattan.
